Chungking telegram No. 49 to British

Embassy, Shanghai. Dr. Kung's "urgent telegram" has

not yet been received by Provincial Finance

Commissioner, i.e. Mayor of Canton. The latter

however tells me that there is no longer any

immediate urgency about transit tax question owing

to decline in imports due to exchange, which renders

tax of little financial assistance.
